I stumbled upon this M5 and, knowing how much some of you like this particular vehicle, knew I had to take a few photos.

The evilest looking of all the M5s

There's a guy who tracks one of these with our BMW CCA chapter in PA/NJ - and used to pass me quite a bit! Same color - plated in Texas to boot! Last year toward the end of the season I show up to NJMP and pick my usual paddock spot in the grass far from the garages. Lo and behold, there's a silver E39 M5 with a tarp over it. I investigate. Texas plates. Damn! The owner is such a nice guy, it was a shame to see that happen to it. Front end was all cracked up. I heard later it was over $15k worth of damage. Not sure what happened to it after that. That's the risk we all take, I guess. I hope this one has a long and happy life on the street!

Great story. Thank you for sharing.

While it's unfortunate to hear that the vehicle was dinged up a bit, I'm glad to know that its owner was enjoying it to the fullest. It would be ironic if this was the same vehicle. Haha

I think it has so far. It was very clean and looked to be very well looked after.

Wouldn't that be funny if it was in fact the same one and he got it fixed? That would just make my day. You know, I recall that this guy (when not on track) often has his dog with him. BMW makes a cover that protects the rear seats when transporting pets. It attaches to the headrests of the front seats, dips down to the rear bench, then comes up to cover the seatbacks and the door panels. Did you happen to notice the back seat covered in that thing? His car would probably be the only E39 M5 in Texas with one of those in it!

It would make mine as well.

You know I didn't actually look at the back seats. I'm kicking myself now. Hopefully, I can run into the owner sometime.

Will always love these, and always picture Tiff flogging one around an old airstrip.

Oh yeah? I used to be pretty active at the NJ chapter CCA for the past couple years. One of the members was selling his Le Mans blue M5 last year. Definitely on my list to get.... and straight pipe it. The time they make is glorious.

Good thing too, because something like this was definitely needed to make up for the mediocre non-M e39.
